London, 1989: the year after the second summer of love and the year when the infamous fatwa was imposed on Salman Rushdie. Shahid, a clean-cut student from the provinces, comes to London after the death of his father. He falls in love with Deedee Osgood, a college lecturer and finds himself caught in a paralysing conflict between liberalism and fundamentalism.
